Leon and Joan Endres contacted the SWCD because their 150-foot streambank on the Vermillion River in Hastings was eroding at an increasing rate. Their property is part of the new development in the southwestern corner of Hastings and the timing of a fall streambank stabilization project fit well with the landscaping and house construction plans. The Endres’ received a 50% match Community Conservation Cost-Share grant to grade the bank to a gradual slope, install three boulder vanes (rock flow deflectors that extend into the river), place 350 dormant willow stakes, and construct 140 feet of fascine. Grading and boulder vane installation began on November 30, 1999 and was completed the next morning. All of the bioengineering was completed on December 1, 1999. Additional plantings will be added in the spring of 2000.
The following individuals designed and/or installed the project: Joan and Leon Endres (the landowners), Jay Riggs (SWCD), David Holmen (SWCD), Darrin Kron (SWCD), Darrin Carlson (NRCS), and Laura Jester (SWCD). Grading and boulder vane construction was done by Tom Otto of Otto Excavating.
