Feedlot Demonstration Projects
Project: Douglas Township Feedlot Improvement Project
Location: Douglas Township, Dakota County (2004)
Partners: Minnesota Board of Soil and Water Resources (BWSR), USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
Design Components: A concrete 'picket' separates solid and liquid manure runoff from the feedlot. Solid manure is trapped behind the picket within the feedlot and is scraped, hauled, and spread on fields to be used as a fertilizer for crops. Liquid manure flows through the picket and the nutrients within the manure are 'treated' by flowing through a designed grass filter strip. The project is designed according to NRCS technical standards.
Technical Details: This feedlot improvement project prevents 278 lbs. of phosphorus from entering Pine Creek during a 4.8 inch rainfall event.
Cost: $45,894 total project cost. $34,420.54 paid for with BWSR Feedlot Water Quality Grant funding, $11, 473.52 paid by the landowner.

Project: Sciota Township Feedlot Improvement Project
Location: Sciota Township, Dakota County (2005)
Partners: Minnesota Board of Soil and Water Resources (BWSR), USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
Design Components: A manure pit was constructed to collect all of the runoff from the upstream feedlot and prevent it from flowing into the adjacent tributary to the Cannon River.
Technical Details: The pit is designed to hold all of the feedlot runoff from a 25-year, 24-hour rainfall event (4.8 inch rainfall over 24 hours), preventing 152 lbs. of phosphorus from entering the stream.
Cost: $65,125 total project cost. $45,455 paid for by BWSR Feedlot Water Quality Grant funding, $19,670 paid for by the landowner.
