Field Check - Mapping Process

Services and Programs/Fact Sheets : Wetland Conservation Act Fact Sheet : Geographic Information System (GIS) : GIS Digital Data : Natural Resource Inventory (NRI) : MLCCS - Natural Resource Inventory (NRI) : Field Check - Mapping Process

About MLCCS    Time Required    Mapping Process    Resources

Once you have completed the interpretation and delineation of your paper maps you are ready to take the maps into the field and check your work. All areas with public access on each map within your project area should be visited to the extent possible. It is strongly recommended to field check all public lands and all communities visible from public roads. Five levels of field verification exist in the MLCCS system: (1) walking the entire site, (2) partially walking the site, (3) viewing the site from the edge(s), (4) viewing the site from a distance, and not viewing the site at all. For each of the first 4 situations, the relevant number is written within the polygon traced on the paper map. For those sites without public access that cannot be viewed the polygon is left blank. The complexity of your land cover and the size of your MMU will dictate the amount of time required to field verify your delineated community polygons.

Partially walking the site.
