Ganse (Lake Marion) Shoreline Restoration Project

The Lake Marion Shoreline Restoration Project is one of 18 demonstration projects throughout the state of Minnesota to show how to stabilize and naturalize our shorelines. The project is an example of how an extremely un-natural site, with a failing retaining
wall with mowed turf to the edge, can be transformed into a stable shoreline with diverse vegetation that provides important fish and wildlife habitat. Further, naturally vegetated buffers provide water quality benefits by filtering runoff from the yard and
providing less habitat for goose grazing and fecal deposition.
Major project activities included:
- Retaining wall removal
- Shoreline shaping and stabilization: The shoreline was reshaped to facilitate a gradual transition from upland to wetland vegetation. The site was stabilized using erosion blankets.
- Wave barrier installation: Temporary (silt curtain) and permanent (cobble vane) wave barriers were installed to protect the aquatic plantings.

- Aquatic vegetation planting
- Riparian vegetation planting
Project funding:
- Landowner (over 50%)
- DNR Lakescaping Demonstration Project Grant ($4,000)
- Dakota SWCD Community Conservation Cost-Share Grant ($1,000)
