Urban Services Fact Sheet
The Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is committed
to providing technical and educational support to the urbanized and urbanizing
portions of Dakota County. Counties experiencing severe development pressures
must deal with a wide variety of complex natural resource management issues.
To address these needs, our office provides numerous services to residents,
cities, townshis, and watershed management organizations.
The SWCD's Urban Erosion Control Program benefits local governments
by providing an expert/specialist to address and prevent erosion problems.
Our assistance allows city staff to focus on other issues while maintaining
water quality and natural resource protection. We:
- Review Grading and Erosion Control Plans
- Inspect construction sites
- Work with developers and contractors to maintain erosion controls
The Back Yard Erosion Control Program provides technical assistance
and commercial-quality erosion control blanket to private individuals with
various types of erosion problems. The SWCD sells the blanket by the foot,
thus making the blanket accessible to the general public for smaller projects.
Staff can also help install these blankets.
The SWCD conducts Environmental Reviews and comments on projects
that may have significant adverse environmental impacts. Environmental Assessment
Worksheets (EAW) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) are two examples
of documents reviewed by the SWCD. These are projects that have the potential
to cause, either directly or indirectly, significant detrimental effects
to our natural resources. The SWCD objectively reviews these projects and
provides insight, perspective, and comments on potential problems or areas
that need to be further addressed.
The SWCD monitors activities and provides technical services to several
Watershed Management Organizations (WMO) and one Watershed District
(WD). Some typical services provided include informing the WMOs of any activities
or projects taking place within their watershed that may be of interest
to them. Staff members also offer to review projects for erosion or wetland
concerns that have an effect on the watershed as a whole. The SWCD is committed
to managing our natural resource at the watershed scale.
