United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service Fact Sheet

Services and Programs/Fact Sheets : United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service Fact Sheet

Mission

To provide leadership in a partnership effort to help people conserve, improve, and sustain our Natural Resources and environment.

Introduction

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), formerly the Soil Conservation Service, was born of adversity, a national response to the Dust Bowl catastrophe of the mid-1930's.

Today, more than 6 decades later, the land-soil, water, air, plants, and animals still require someone to speak for their health and well being. That responsibility remains a challenge for the NRCS, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's lead conservation agency.

NRCS employees have the technical expertise and field experience to help land users solve their natural resource challenges and maintain and improve their economic viability. Employees are highly skilled in many scientific and technical specialities, including soil science, soil conservation, agronomy, biology, agroecology, range conservation, forestry, engineering, geology, hydrology, cultural resources, and economics.

Nearly three-fourths of the technical assistance provided by the agency goes to helping farmers and ranchers develop conservation systems uniquely suited to their land and individual ways of doing business. The agency also provides assistance to rural and urban communities to reduce erosion, conserve and protect water, and solve other resource problems.
